A. Before You Use FieldNotes — Pause and Ask
Before generating any output, ask yourself:
- Have I anonymised all identifying details?
- Am I using this to clarify, not to escape?
- Am I willing to disagree with what comes back?
- Would I be comfortable discussing this use in supervision?
If the answer to any of these is no, pause.
B. During Use — Keep These Boundaries in Mind
✔ Use FieldNotes to:
- clarify language,
- organise process,
- reflect on participation,
- notice repetition and field patterns.
✖ Do not use FieldNotes to:
- decide interventions,
- diagnose,
- justify authority,
- persuade clients,
- resolve ethical uncertainty.
The app supports thinking, not deciding.
C. After Reading the Output — Ground Yourself
After reading an output:
- Notice your body.
- Notice whether you feel more present or more pressured.
- Ask: What does this change — if anything — in how I show up next time?
If the answer is nothing, that may be appropriate.
D. Red Flags — When to Stop Using the App Temporarily
Stop using FieldNotes if you notice:
- compulsive generation,
- growing self-doubt,
- over-reliance on wording,
- avoidance of supervision,
- emotional numbing or distancing.
Returning to embodied clinical presence is always the priority.
E. Ethical Bottom Line
FieldNotes does not hold responsibility.
You do.
That responsibility includes knowing when not to use the tool.
